There are many factors that contribute to the overall appearance of a great coat and healthy skin in our dogs. But there can be just as many, which can be harmful and detract from their whole beauty. Dogs today are exposed to so many things, such as pollutants, parasites, allergens and even the foods that we feed them; all of which play a role in their appearance and health.
My dogs have been receiving about a tablespoon or so of salmon oil added to their food everyday for a few years now. I find that nourishing my dog’s skin and coat from the inside out not only aides in better grooming, but it enhances their own natural beauty and health. Giving your Cockapoo foods rich in antioxidants such as fruits and omega-3 fatty acids helps increase their skin’s health and elasticity. It keeps my dog’s skin supple and their coat’s looking great; silky soft and with a deep shiny luster. I also find the addition of salmon oil especially useful during the winter months when dry skin is such a common problem for everyone including our dogs. Environmental humidity is at a low and that causes skin to become severely dry and itchy.
But there are so many other benefits to giving my Cockapoos salmon oil. Salmon oil is linked to a healthy heart and brain function. Moreover, it leads toward strengthening a normal functioning immune system, aids in healthy joints and acts as an anti-inflammatory.
Omega-3 fatty acids, which are a key nutrient in the oil, are essential building blocks that all dogs need for maintaining a balanced metabolism. When consistently present in a diet over a long period of time, Omega-3 may have enough power to stop the inflammatory reactions responsible for arthritis and in some cases hip dysplasia. Omega-3 is also a basic building block for nerve tissue and brain cells. In conjunction with Omega 6, Omega-3 must be present in proper balance for good health. Basically, the Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory benefits and help prevent heart disease while Omega-6 lowers blood cholesterol. Finally, salmon is an excellent source of high quality protein; it contains all the essential amino acids. It is a powerful antioxidant, rich in minerals and vitamins A, D, E, B6 and B12. Salmon oil is easy to digest and all of my dogs just love it…
